Question: I click on a Swooshed link but it doesn’t ask me to install Red Swoosh. Why?

Answer: Red Swoosh is currently only supported on Windows 2000 and up. Though we have both Linux and Mac ports in the works (no joking, there’s a programmer 3 feet away from me working on it as I type), for the meantime anybody who clicks on the Swooshed link from Linux, Mac, or old versions of Windows will download straight from the webserver, bypassing Red Swoosh.

PS: There is currently a Vista bug that causes the installer to terminate prematurely; a fix for this is in the works.

Question: I ran RSInstaller.exe and it brought up the installation progress bar, but it reported an error mid-way, what should I do?

Answer: The web is a complex place, and while our automated installation system works in most places, we’re still working out the kinks on some networks. Overall, here are some general tips to get up and running:

    - Are you running in a limited access account? Try logging in as Administrator and then reinstalling. (A fix to support limited accounts is in the works.)

    - Do you have a firewall enabled? Try disabling it and clicking Retry.

    - Are you connected to the internet through a web proxy? To check, go to the Internet Options control panel, choose the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings. if any of those checkboxes are checked, it’s possible. Please email [email protected] to resolve this issue.

If these don’t work, here are some specific answers regarding the individual error messages:

Error: Unable to connect to the Red Swoosh network, please check your internet connection and try again.

This is probably the most common error — it means the installer was unable to download a critical configuration file used in the download process. If you get this and the above tips don’t work, email [email protected].

Error: Problem connecting to the Red Swoosh network, please check your internet connection and try again.

This means we’ve downloaded our configuration file, but it came through corrupted. Click Retry and see if this resolves it. If it does not, please email a copy of C:\Program Files\RSSoft\client.ini to [email protected] so we can diagnose the problem further.

Error: Unable to download Red Swoosh (X.YYY-ZZZ), please check your internet connection and try again.

This means we were unable to download the latest version of the Red Swoosh client. Click Retry and see if this resolves it. If not, please email [email protected].

Error: Unable to run Red Swoosh (X.YYY-ZZZ), please check your internet connection and try again.

This means we’ve downloaded the application, but it came through corrupted. Click Retry and see if this resolves it. If it does not, please email a copy of C:\Program Files\RSSoft\RedSwoosh-X.YYY-ZZZ.dll to [email protected] so we can diagnose the problem further.

If you see any error not reported here, just email [email protected] and we’ll get you set up.

Question: I’ve already installed Red Swoosh, but every time I click on a Swooshed link it asks me to reinstall. Why?

Answer: This probably means you have cookies disabled, or are clearing you cookies. For us to know that you’re already installed, we set a cookie called EDNID on the redswoosh.net domain. Please verify that you don’t have your browser set to automatically clear cookies and try it again.

"Redswoosh is already running." Well, you couldn't prove it by me. I'm trying to download a Redswoosh file to listen to, and although my download managers says the file is downloaded, I can't find the file. I thought that maybe I'd need to click on the RS icon and select the download, but all I get when I do that is, "Redswoosh is already running." Now what?

Hi coolwater, there are a few ways to get to the downloaded content:

    1) Just re-click on whatever link you originally clicked, and it’ll play straight from the cache
    2) Go to the Red Swoosh control panel (located with the rest of your normal system control panels)
    3) Go to C:\Program Files\RSSoft\Cache

    Does this help?
